Millicent Irene Kushner Mahmassani passed away peacefully on December 20, 2017, at the Journey Care Hospice in Glenview, IL, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. 


Born in New York City in 1954 to Herbert L. Kushner and Eleanor Kyman, she married Hani S. Mahmassani in 1980, and gave birth to Amine Herbert (1984), now in Long Beach, CA, and Ziad Sobhi (1988), married to Cassandra Stephens, in Salt Lake City, UT. She received her doctorate (EdD) in Applied Psycholinguistics and Bilingual Education from Boston University (1988), MS in Education (Purdue, 1978) and BA in Spanish from NYU (1975), and held academic positions at the University of Texas, Austin (1988-2002) and the University of Maryland, College Park. (2002-2011). 


In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by brothers Harry of New Brunswick, NJ and Benjamin of Los Angeles, CA.


A memorial service will be held on January 3, 2018 at 2:00PM at the Vail Chapel on the campus of Northwestern University (1870 Sheridan Rd. Evanston, IL 60208), followed by a reception with the family at the Guild Lounge in Scott Hall (across the street from Vail Chapel).
